Research studies found out that environment plays a crucial role in rehabilitation and treatment of addiction. Most rehab facilities, such as KAYA, provide a safe and controlled environment where clients can abstain from engaging in drugs while maintaining a no-prison feel. Clients can go for a massage, hit the gym, or go for an excursion, being a part of their treatment program.
However, we must first understand that one’s environment can predispose him/her into engaging in alcohol and drugs. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, addiction is defined as a chronic, relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences. Chronic use of these harmful substances may commonly start from the following:
- Out of curiosity
- To feel better
- To do better
- Peer pressure
- Most especially for alcohol and tobacco, its widespread availability
Here, the environment, along with the people surrounding the individual, provided a conducive setting for drug and alcohol addiction.
At KAYA, aside from the environment and treatment program we provide, we also hold family sessions and group therapy for the clients. With respect to the modification of the environment when the client’s treatment is over, our counselors provide suggestions and options the family can adapt to sustain the abstinence to these harmful substances.
Before the client moves out from KAYA, we suggest credible sponsors for him/her. We also do follow up Skype calls to the client to check on them. We always believe in strong peer support in helping an individual stay clean and sober.
Environment is but one of the many factors that predisposes one to addiction. Likewise, it is also an important element for recovery. Our counselors at KAYA can always help.
